BIG Government is Gouging Us

There has been a lot of outrage lately about high gas prices at the pump. And the Mainstream Media, congress, and president Bush have been trying to convince us that the oil companies are gouging us. I do not believe this is true.

What you’re not hearing in the agenda driven media is that we have not built a new oil refinery in 30 years. We are not allowed to drill for oil within our own boarders; such as, Alaska or the Gulf of Mexico. This is because the kooky environmentalists, with the help of congress, have successfully prevented us from doing so. Also, India and communist China have been demanding a lot more oil because their economies are growing rapidly. I believe that this has caused supply problems.

It’s about time that we ignore these insane environmentalists and we start building new oil refineries, and begin drilling for oil within our own boarders. By doing this we would be able to increase the supply, which will allow the oil companies to reduce their prices.

Also because of ridicules environmental regulations, oil refineries have to produce different gasoline formulations for each state. Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to just have a universal gasoline formulation?

Our government is trying to convince us that the oil companies are gouging us, but they are not telling us how much they are profiting off of gasoline. The oil companies may be making recorded profits, but our government profits even more than the oil companies from gas taxes.

NewsMax.com published an article about this topic, “While the media continues to blame the big oil companies for gouging U.S. motorists as they collect record breaking profits, the windfall profits raked in by the government in the form of energy tax revenue actually dwarf the oil companies' jackpot.

The press sounded the alarm last year when the largest U.S. oil company, ExxonMobil Corp, announced profits of $36 billion. But according to the Tax Foundation, the biggest price gouging profiteer was the U.S. government, cashing in to the tune of $54 billion in oil and gas taxes.” –

A website called “Gas Price Watch” has a chart showing the Gasoline Tax Rates by State (not including the federal gas tax). Check it out.

I think it is quite clear that the government is gouging us at the pump.

As a conservative I believe in limited government; therefore, we need to significantly cut taxes in America. The America people should be able to determine how they spend their money, not the government.

Before cutting taxes we need to eliminate pork spending and cut every aspect of government. It's not fiscally conservative to increase the deficit.

While our "leaders" in Congress wring their hands and demand that someone do something, they and state leadership have the power to, with a stroke of the pen, eliminate their share of the price, which is significant.

$100 rebate (Republican) does nothing to reduce the price of gas, and a tax on oil company profits (Democrat) will only raise the price.

Any politician who desires lower prices but is unwilling to consider a temporary halt to gas taxes is being disengenuous. He is just making hay out of the issue by demonizing oil companies. They must not care about the people oil companies employ, or more notably and numerous, the millions of people who have their retirement invested in oil.

In the long term, we need more refineries and the ability to drill on our own soil. These are the only ways we can alleviate the pressure and reduce reliance on foreign oil.

It's time to stop a tiny sect of the population, namely reactionary environmentalists who crave an oil crisis, to dictate our energy policy.

Open up ANWAR and the gulf as soon as possible. Begin construction on as many refineries as the country needs to increase supply.

It is the only way.

If they don't decide to repeal taxes, the government should just pump billions of dollars into alternative energy sources.

If we just put serious money into it, we could break our dependence on oil and tell the MidEast it no longer has any strategic value.

There is no reason why the government could combine all of the suggestions.

A temporary repeal of gas taxes for immediate relief.

Begin drilling and constructing refineries to insure we can provide gas at reasonable prices over the longer haul. Also, so we can flip the ME the bird.

I don't know about billions, but a significant investment in alternative fuels would insure that we are ready to move on in the next decade or two.

This would provide relief, now, a year from now, and a generation from now.

Wasn't that simple?
